InterMISSION: An Artist Development Program during COVID-19

Eva Christensen – View of the Fredericton Playhouse, on a Chilly Evening in May | May 2019 – Watercolour and ink on Canson art board

The Fredericton Playhouse is adapting to the unique and challenging situation we face with the pandemic — restrictions in mass gatherings — by offering artists in our Province the opportunity to use our stage, equipment and expertise in a series of paid creative residencies. For part of the Fall 2020, we are pausing our regular programming to offer a new Artist Development Program called InterMISSION to allow artists the chance to continue to work and hone their craft in our professional theatre space.

As part of our program, we are offering artists and artistic companies the opportunity to work with professionals with expertise in a field corresponding to their own artistic practice. For example, an artist may work with a mentor, outside eye, dramaturge, or other leading-edge innovator, that can assist and augment their artistic growth in a specialized, nuanced manner.

Each residency coincides with a digital element, designed with the artists’ needs in mind. Video footage or audio recordings produced from the residency can be used in a multiplicity of ways including:

  • promotion,
  • high quality documentation, or
  • shared as video performance in a variety of online platforms.

How you can help

This program is made possible through funding from the Province of New Brunswick, the City of Fredericton, and generous private donors. By making a gift, you are directly helping nurture and support local artists in their creative work.

Information for Artists

Are you a New Brunswick-based performing artist, ensemble, or company with a project you are looking to develop or explore?

The Fredericton Playhouse is accepting applications for a new Artist Development Program, InterMISSION. Designed for artists, its objective is to nurture and support creativity and innovative practices in their discipline(s). The InterMISSION residencies offer access to our theatre space and facilities tailored to the participants’ needs and availability.

  • Each residency has the opportunity to have an audio/video component to record a documentary-style peek into the creative process, a performance for promotion, content offerings, demo recording, or a live stream performance.
  • Each residency offers a resource expert, specific to your discipline or artistic focus (selected by you and paid by us).

Some examples: creating new works, innovative music or sound recordings, video and lighting exploration, script development, movement exploration, staging or artistic specialization for plays, acting for the camera, vocal coaching, preparing for concerts, exploring or researching innovative ideas, small group collective composition lab for music and dance.

Residencies are open to theatre artists, musicians, choreographers, composers, dancers, visual artists, designers, etc.
