For In My Body, street dancer/choreographer Crazy Smooth brings together an intergenerational group of dancers and an international creative team, for a performance that explores aging and vulnerability. In hip hop culture, having swagger is critical - being braggadocious and being able to back up that attitude is key. But what happens when dancers age, and the physical demands of dance on the body begin to catch up to the dancer? In My Body welcomes this evolution, and its effects on street dancers.
Crazy Smooth is one of Canada’s most respected street dancers, choreographers, instructors, judges, and community leaders. He started dancing in 1997, and founded the company Bboyizm in 2004, bringing street dance to the world of theatre. Bboyizm believes that authentic self-expression enables an individual – and by extension, a community – to realize its full potential.
In My Body features nine dancers from around the world, ranging in age from 24 to 58: Julie Rock, Mark Collantes, Jayson Collantes, DKC Freeze, JK-47, Vibz, Tash, Crazy Smooth, and Nubian Néné. While together they represent a spectrum of age and experience, each one has their own talent. For fans of hip hop, or anyone who has experienced a change in their body’s abilities: you don’t want to miss this show.
