2017CharlieBrown

In 1965, drummer Jerry Granelli, the newest member of the Vince Guaraldi Trio, was joined by Fred Marshall on bass in a San Francisco studio. In just a three-hour session they recorded the soundtrack for a scrappy little animated Christmas special featuring the Peanuts gang. The trio had never even seen any of the artwork. No one knew that this would become the iconic soundtrack to the classic A Charlie Brown Christmas. Jerry left the group soon after, and became and continues to be hailed as a world-class improviser and teacher of jazz and music creation. He also continues to create: his latest ensemble just released a new recording, What I Hear Now (ADDO).

Jerry is the only surviving member of the Vince Guaraldi Trio lineup that made that fateful recording, and he was inspired by his grandchildren and the generations who grew up loving the Charlie Brown soundtrack to perform the music again. He gathered a new trio, consisting of Simon Fisk on bass and Chris Gestrin on piano, and began to perform the classic and familiar piece of music. Since the project began, Jerry and his trio have played sold-out shows, and have given grandparents and parents the chance to introduce a new generation to jazz music.

During the show, Jerry Granelli and his trio spend 90 minutes drawing from the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack, while sharing the stage with a local children’s choir. There are some stories, lots of music, a wave of Christmas spirit, and even tears of joy.
